More than 1,000 journalists and media staff have died around the globe in the past 10 years, simply because they tried to tell the story. Each and every year brings more casualties.
INSI believes this spiralling death toll can be stemmed. A journalist who is well prepared for a dangerous assignment - be it conflict, natural disaster or epidemic - is more effective and has a better chance to avoid harm. The best way for an individual or news team to prepare is by learning from colleagues and experts who understand what reporters and their desks need.
INSI, run by journalists for journalists, is the only news media support group solely concerned with safety. It is a training and information network designed to help colleagues survive the story. INSI raises money to provide hostile environment training free of charge to vulnerable journalists around the globe who lack the means to obtain their own.
Formed in 2003, INSI is a unique global coalition of media and news support groups. INSI has provided safety training for more than 2,000 media staff in 23 countries.
Originally based in Brussels, INSI has also set up regional operations in North America, Brazil and now the UK.
INSIUK is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (Registered Charity No. 1144296).
INSIUK, part of the International News Safety Institute family, is supporting 'No Woman's Land: On the Frontlines with Female Reporters' - the first book dedicated to the safety of women journalists.
