BBC’s Lyse Doucet to chair panel at launch of INSI’s book for women journalists

8 Mar 2012

BBC presenter and special correspondent Lyse Doucet will moderate a panel of prominent journalists at tonight’s launch of the International News Safety Institute’s ‘No Woman’s Land: On the Frontlines with Female Reporters’ – the first book solely dedicated to the safety of women journalists.

Doucet, who has contributed to the ground-breaking publication, will be joined by war photographer and fellow contributor Kate Brooks, Sky News Head of International News Sarah Whitehead, CNN Presenter Nima Elbagir, Reuters reporter Maria Golovnina and Head of News for BBC World News Andrew Roy. Sponsored by Thomson Reuters and hosted at their Canary Wharf office, the panel debate will discuss the issues newswomen face working in conflict and danger zones around the world.

Triggered by last year’s shocking attack on CBS reporter Lara Logan, who has written the foreword to ‘No Woman’s Land’, the book provides an unprecedented insight into the lives of newswomen working across the media in more than a dozen countries, from reporters in international news organisations to journalists working in local media outlets as far afield as Mexico, Burma, Russia and Indonesia.

The collection of forty compelling stories describes the risks, the challenges and the emotional and physical impact working in the media has had on these women who risk their lives to bring us the news. As well as telling the stories of these brave journalists - camerawomen, photographers, correspondents and reporters - the book contains safety advice and guidance for women and men in the news media.

Copies of ‘No Woman’s Land’ will be available to buy at the launch at a cost of £20 by cash or cheque. Proceeds from the book will go to safety training for female journalists. The book is also available to order on INSI’s website www.newssafety.org

The event will be live streamed from 1830 GMT and available to watch on www.reuters.co.uk, www.reuters.com and channel 401. It will also be live-tweeted, and can be followed with the hashtag #nowomansland

Seats will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
