Denmark is a modern western democracy with limited security concerns. They are a founding member of the EU and a member of NATO and enjoy strong regional relations.
In recent years the risk of Islamic terrorist attacks on Denmark has increased due to the countries active participation in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. There was also the notable incident in 2005 where a Danish newspaper published cartoons of the prophet Muhammad. This led to widespread condemnation in the Islamic world and open threats, including Jihad, have been made towards Denmark. As a consequence it is advised that visitors remain vigilant, especially around government building and on public transport links.
Incidents of civil unrest do occur, and although they are unlikely to become violent they should be avoided wherever possible as precaution.
Crime levels are low and largely confined to petty crimes, such as pick-pocketing. Standard precautions are advised and the majority of visits to the country pass without incident.
Two men have been arrested in Denmark on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack in the country. The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) said that the men were brothers of Somali origin and had links to the militant Islamic group al-Shabaab.
Various right-wing groups have gathered in the Danish city of Aarhus to hold anti-Islam protests. The rally has been organised by the English Defence League, who have said that the even signalled the beginning of a Europe-wide movement against Islam in Europe.
One person has been killed and another wounded in a shooting outside a mosque in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. The incident occurred as Muslim's were celebrating Eid, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Danish police say that the gunman escaped from the scene and that a motive for the attack had not yet been established.
Police have arrested five men on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack on the Danish newspaper that printed cartoons portraying the prophet Muhammad. During the raids police found an automatic weapon, a silencer and live ammunition.
