There are a number of security concerns throughout Pakistan and the country is generally regarded as a high-risk destination. The NATO-led conflict in neighbouring Afghanistan has significantly destabilised the country, especially along the north-western border. The Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the stronghold of Tehrik-e-Taliban (Pakistani Taliban), is particularly volatile. Due to the prevalence of Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters in the FATA (of both Pakistani and Afghani origin) the Pakistani military regularly carries out major operations in the area and all non-essential travel to it should be avoided.
Sectarian violence is reported on an almost daily basis in Pakistan, with attacks increasing since 2010. Most attacks are carried out in public areas, such as mosques and crowded markets, and often involve planted or suicide bombs. The port city of Karachi is particularly plagued by sectarian violence; according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) more than 1,715 people were killed in the city in 2011.
Relations with India are currently cordial, with bilateral trade increasing in recent months. Since the two countries foreign secretaries met in Delhi in July, 2012 to discuss the ongoing investigations into the attack relations have improved. As a consequence the possibilities of conflict between India and Pakistan are low in the short-medium.
