Overview

Overview

Iraq is still in a transitional period following the US-led invasion into the country in 2003.  Much of the country’s infrastructure was destroyed during the conflict and the current administration is slowly restoring law and order.  This is a long and protracted process and a number of serious security issues still exist in the country.

Sectarian violence is the main security concern and acts of violence still occur with some frequency. Insurgent groups are using guerrilla tactics and acts of terrorism within Iraq and the threat of violence is heightened in Baghdad and surrounding urban areas.  Suicide bombings, mortar attacks and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are just some of the methods of the internal insurgent groups. Visitors should remain extremely vigilant at all time, especially around hotels, government buildings, security checkpoints and religious sites as these are areas likely to be targeted.

Crime levels are high in Iraq, largely due to the limited resources of the state security forces.  Violent crimes, such as murder, armed robbery and assault are relatively common, especially in Baghdad. Petty crime is also a concern in urban areas and visitors are advised to remain extremely vigilant whilst in the country.

Incidents of civil unrest are common and motivated by a range of factors.  Many incidents become violent and there have also been reports of insurgent groups carrying out attacks against large gatherings of people.  Due to the extreme risk all large scale public gatherings should be avoided and local media should be monitored for developments.

Health

  • Recommended vaccinations/boosters: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Tuberculosis and Typhoid.
  • Due to incidents of Rabies in Iraq necessary precautions, such as avoiding direct contact with animals, is advised.
  • Low risk of insect-borne diseases Malaria exists in Iraq.  Precautions should be taken to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
  • Water-borne disease Cholera is also a health risk.  Avoid drinking tap water wherever possible.
  • Risk of the parasitic infection Schistosomiasis.  Avoid swimming or bathing in fresh water.
  • Standard of health care is poor in Iraq, especially outside of Baghdad.  Visitors should arrange any required medication and extensive medical insurance prior to arrival.
  • More information can be found at the National Travel Health Network and Centre (www.nathnac.org).

Travel

  • Baghdad International Airport is located 16km from the city centre.
  • Taxis are widely available in urban areas and fares should be agreed prior to departure.
  • Public transport infrastructure is of a poor standard.  Buses and trains are unreliable and poorly maintained and should be avoided.
  • Travel throughout Iraq is extremely dangerous due to the incidences of attacks on vehicles and existence of IEDs and road side bombs.  Travel at night should be avoided wherever possible.
