The security situation in Iraq continues to be extremely volatile, with deadly attacks reported on an almost daily basis. The last US combat troops withdrew on 18 December, 2011, leaving the Iraqi security forces to take over responsibility for maintaining stability in the country. Since then the number of attacks has steadily risen, with more than 300 people killed in July, 2012 alone. Terrorist and sectarian attacks are increasingly being coordinated across Iraq, with multiple bombings reported across a number of cities. Shia Muslims are frequently targeted, and the potential for attacks increases during religious festivals. The capital Baghdad, and the surrounding areas, continue to be the most affected by the violence. Current high-risk regions include Baghdad, Siyala, Wasit, Kirkuk, Babil, Maysan, Ninawa and al-Anbar.
Although the number of incidents has fallen recently kidnapping continues to pose a threat to foreign nationals; abductions are carried out for both financial and political reasons. Extremist Islamic groups operate inside Iraq and have been responsible for a number of kidnappings, many of which have ended in the deaths of hostages. Foreign nationals have been targeted in rural parts of Iraq and travel between different cities by land should be taken with extreme caution, and particularly not be carried out at night. Highways 1, 5, 10 and 15 are among the most dangerous roads in Iraq.
Incidents of civil unrest are common in Iraq, and always have the potential to turn violent. Due to the recent US-led conflict in the country many protests include anti-Western sentiments. Large gatherings are also often targeted in bombing attacks by extremist groups. Visitors should avoid all large scale public gatherings and monitor local media for political developments. Curfews are often enforced during periods of widespread unrest.
The northern federal region of Kurdistan is much more stable than the rest of Iraq, and it has avoided much of the violence which has blighted the rest of the country. The recent internal conflict in Syria has had a destabilising effect on the region, the outcome of which will have implications for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Another important regional factor is the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) which operates in the north of the KRG, where they launch attacks into neighbouring Turkey. The Turkish military carries out intermittent counter-attacks across the border, and travel in the northern KRG should be undertaken with caution.
