A journalist with Free Media Limited, publisher of Tanzania Daima newspaper, Mr Shaaban Matutu, has been shot and wounded by the police during a fracas as the law enforcement officers were looking for a criminal.
Mr Matutu was shot by Constable Idrissa, F 8991, who with other police officers, had raided his home at Kunduchi Machimbo, in the outskirts of the city, looking for a woman known as Mama J. The police suspect the woman for sheltering robbers.
The Kinondoni Police Commander, Mr Charles Kenyela, confirmed the incident which occurred at Mr Matutu's home at about 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. The police commander said the bullet went off by mistake as the law enforcement officer was trying to protect himself from Mr Matutu, who was armed with a machete.
The journalist is currently admitted at the Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI) for treatment and his condition is said to be stable. Accounts of the events indicate that the law enforcement officers had mistakenly raided the journalist's home looking for the woman.
Mr Matutu's wife is also known as Mama J. "When the police arrived at the house asking for Mama J, Mr Matutu sensed danger and armed himself with a machete in case of any eventuality.
The police wanted to arrest the woman but Mr Matutu would not let them take his wife and it was during the melee that he was shot," Commander Kenyela said. Constable Idrissa is also undergoing treatment on cuts he sustained on his right hand during the brawl, according to Mr Kenyela.
